Flag and symbols

Two equal horizontal bands—red above black—carry a centered yellow emblem: a five-pointed star inside half a cogwheel, crossed by a machete in the style of a hammer and sickle. Red stands for liberty, black for the African continent, and the emblem symbolizes workers and peasants. The giant black sable antelope (Palanca negra gigante) is the national symbol.
