Geography
Landlocked in interior Western Africa, Mali lies southwest of Algeria, north of Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, and Burkina Faso, and west of Niger. The terrain is mostly flat to rolling northern plains covered by sand, with savanna in the south and rugged hills in the northeast. Mali has three natural zones: the southern, cultivated Sudanese; the central, semiarid Sahelian; and the northern, arid Saharan.
Its natural resources include gold, phosphates, kaolin, salt, limestone, uranium, gypsum, granite, and hydropower. Hombori Tondo is the highest point. The Senegal River is the lowest point.
