Government

A federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy governs Malaysia. The legal system mixes English common law, Islamic law (sharia), and customary law. The Federal Court can review legislative acts at the request of the supreme head of the federation. The latest constitution was drafted 21 February 1957 and became effective 27 August 1957. Independence came on 31 August 1957 from the UK. Independence Day (or Merdeka Day), 31 August (1957), marks the independence of Malaya; Malaysia Day, 16 September (1963), marks the formation of Malaysia.

Flag and symbols

Fourteen equal horizontal stripes alternate red and white; a dark blue upper-left rectangle has a yellow crescent and fourteen-pointed yellow star. Often called Jalur Gemilang (Stripes of Glory), its stripes stand for equal status among thirteen member states and the federal government; its star points represent their unity. The crescent is a traditional symbol of Islam; blue symbolizes the unity of the Malay people, and yellow is the royal color. The national symbols are tiger and hibiscus.
