Overview

People and society

People are heavily concentrated in the west, particularly the northwest, in and around the capital of Amman. A sizeable but smaller population lives in the southwest along the shore of the Gulf of Aqaba.

Jordanian, Syrian, Palestinian, Egyptian and Iraqi communities live alongside others. Arabic is the official language, while English is widely understood among the upper and middle classes. Islam is the official religion and is predominantly Sunni. Christians include Greek Orthodox and Greek and Roman Catholics, as well as Syrian Orthodox, Coptic Orthodox, Armenian Orthodox, and Protestant denominations. Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, folk, other, and unaffiliated affiliations are also present.
