A parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy, Antigua and Barbuda is also a Commonwealth realm. Its legal system is based on the English model of common law. The latest constitution, The Antigua and Barbuda Constitution Order 1981, took effect 31 October 1981, after its presentation on 31 July 1981. Independence from the UK came on 1 November 1981. The national holiday is Independence Day, 1 November (1981).
