Indo-Aryan, Dravidian, and other ethnic groups make up India's population. Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Urdu, Kannada, Odia, Malayalam, Punjabi, Assamese, and Maithili are spoken, alongside other languages. English is the subsidiary official language and the most important one for national, political, and commercial communication.

Religious affiliations include Hindu, Muslim, Christian, and Sikh. A very high population density extends across most of the country, except in the deserts in the northwest and the mountain fringe in the north. The population core lies in the north along the banks of the Ganges, while other river valleys and southern coastal areas also have large population concentrations.
